A razor-thin majority of MPs have stopped Bill C-391, a private Member's bill that would have eliminated the federal long-gun registry. The MPs voted in favour of a motion from the House of Commons Committee on Public Safety and National Security to end the Bill's progress through Parliament.

The result of this vote is thanks to PSAC members and staff and many others who have lobbied, written and called their MPs urging them to save the registry. It is also thanks to the hard work and commitment by the PSAC members working at the registry who have spent many months speaking out and rallying support in their community.

While C-391 has been stopped the registry remains at risk. Prime Minister Harper has vowed to put an end to it and to destroy the registry's millions of records. While the Conservatives have used this issue to divide rural and urban residents, a majority of Canadians are not falling for this tactic because they understand the registry is a valuable tool in preventing violent deaths. It's time for the Harper Conservatives to stop playing politics with public safety.
