Labour College application deadline extended to July 24
There’s good news for any of our activists who were considering applying to the Labour College of Canada’s 2010 residential program, but had difficulty meeting the previously-announced June 30 deadline.
That deadline has now been extended to July 24.
With its theme of Our Economy, Our Jobs, Our Future, the 2010 program is exceptionally timely. Labour College students will develop analytical and research skills to empower their work as union activists, while learning about our movement's history, values and challenges.
Information and application forms can be found HERE on the Canadian Labour Congress Web site.
(Please note that the program is delivered only in English.)

Our best wishes to Donn Reid, as veteran Labour Relations Officer retires from the USGE
Donn Reid, the popular and respected USGE Labour Relations Officer, takes a well-deserved retirement this month.
Known equally for his quick wit and common sense, the native Newfoundlander will be greatly missed by National Office staff and CSC members alike.
The USGE will ‘officially’ recognize and celebrate Donn’s lengthy contributions to our union at this September’s National Executive meeting.
Meanwhile, as can be seen in the above photo, Donn’s dedication and commitment to serving the interests of our members has also been recognized by the employer – in this case, members of the joint National Employee Assistance Program Advisory Committee.
Donn is shown standing front and centre with his most appropriate gift received from NEAPAC members in late June: a gold watch!
Congratulations Donn, and a long and happy retirement.

Don’t wait to register for the PSAC National Health and Safety Conference!
For good reason, the USGE has a large number of activists keenly interested in health and safety issues.
So, before heading off this month or next on that well-deserved holiday, make sure you register for the 2009 PSAC National Health and Safety Conference!
An official call to the Conference is being sent to all USGE Locals this month. The registration deadline for this extremely-popular Conference is 4 p.m. Ottawa time, Friday, August 21. And, delegate costs are completely covered by the PSAC.
The Conference itself – entitled Workplace Alliances for Healthy Environments: Regulate, Agitate, Enforce – takes place next November 20-22 in Montreal.
If you’re a USGE health and safety activist, you definitely don’t want to miss this important event. So, make sure you register as early as possible.

Dorchester BBQ rallies community to save farm program at Westmorland Institution
The community of Dorchester, New Brunswick has rallied to support our ‘Save Our Farms’ campaign – efforts by the USGE and other organizations to reverse the Harper government’s decision to eliminate prison farm programs.
The focus of the June 26 BBQ, which was well covered by local media, was the fate of the farm program at Westmorland Institution.
Some two hundred residents turned out to hear from a number of local dignitaries, including (from right to left, by row, in photos below): Jeannie Baldwin, PSAC Regional Executive Vice-President for the Atlantic Region; Mike Arsenault, USGE Regional Vice-President for our Atlantic Region CSC members; Mel Goodland, Mayor of Dorchester; Mike Olscamp, Conservative MLA for the area; and Heather Reid, President of USGE Local 60128.
Dominic LeBlanc, Member of Parliament for the area, was unable to attend the event due to the regrettable passing of his father, former Governor General Roméo LeBlanc. Nonetheless, in the run-up to the event, the Liberal MP sent his own flyer to every household in Dorchester emphasizing the importance of the Westmorland farm program to the broader community and encouraging support for our ‘Save Our Farms’ campaign.
